Commentary: Seen here is a detail from the large mosaic pavement in the Church of SS. Cosmas and Damian located in Gerasa in the modern country of Jordan. The church was built in the early 6th century CE, and the mosaic dates to the Byzantine period. (324 CE-638 CE). The mosaic contains a wealth of geometric designs punctuated by panels depicting people or animals, occasionally with accompanying inscriptions.
