Title / Description: Athletic field
Provenance: Delphi, Greece

Commentary: Delphi was an important city and sanctuary near the Gulf of Corinth, and was also the home of the famous Delphic Oracle. This is a picture showing the city's athletic field, or stadium, the site of the Pythian Games. The stadium dates to the 5th century BCE, although it was renovated in the 2nd century CE by the Roman philanthopist Herodes Atticus. The stone seats seen in this picture were added at that juncture. In the background is Mount Parnassus.
