Provenance: Palmyra, Syria
Object Type: image - architecture
Date: 2nd c. CE

Commentary: Palmyra is located in the southeastern area of modern Syria, about 150 miles from Damascus and 30 miles west of the Euphrates River. This picture shows the city's Theatre. The theatre's stage, although only one story high, is decorated rather elaborately, with several sets of projecting columns giving the stage some depth. The middle pair of columns is crowned by a pediment and covers a niche in the back wall of the stage.
