Title / Description: Western Wall
Provenance: Jerusalem, Israel
Object Type: image - architecture
Date: 1st c BCE/1st c CE

Commentary:

The lower courses of the temple mount reconstructed by Herod the Great between 20 BCE and 28 CE are all that remains of the Second Temple. The enormous but finely dressed blocks in the lower courses date from the Herodian period. The less refined masonry of the upper courses is from more recent times.

The wall or Kotel remains a sacred site for pious Jews, who are seen here at prayer. The conventions of an orthodox synagogue are observed; hence men and women pray at separate sections of the wall.
