Title / Description: Qumran (finds): manuscript (1QSa, the Rule of the Congregation)Commentary: Strictly speaking the photograph shows the text known as 1QSa, the Rule of the Congregation, which was part of the same scroll as 1QS. (ET)
Manuscript 1QS is known as the Rule of the Community, and is one of the more important documents to come from Qumran. Copies of the Rule were found in several different caves at Qumran. The Rule describes the structure of the community which lived at Qumran, and thus has become an object of great debate among scholars who wish to define the nature of the community and its influence.
