Title / Description: Qumran (caves): cave 1Q
Provenance: Qumran, Israel
Date: 2nd c. BCE - 1st c. CE

Commentary: Cave 1Q was the first excavated cave in the Qumran area. After one month of excavation in 1949, textual and other remains in the cave proved that the original textual fragments sold by the Bedouin who discovered these caves had originated in Cave 1Q. Among the other finds in this cave were the remains of food, clothing, pottery and phylacteries.
